Baking Group

I've been thinking. I have lots of friends and family who love to bake. What I'd like to know is this: would anyone be interested in creating a baking group. Sort of like this one I found a long time ago. Maybe I'm bitter that I can't join that one. I do love Dorie Greenspan's baking book. It would be fun to bake our way through a baking book.
Here's my thoughts on how it could work:
  1. I'll set up a seperate blog.
  2. We choose a baking book. I have a bajillion suggestions!
  3. Tuesdays with Dorie does a recipe every week. We don't have to do every week - we could do every other week.
  4. We take turns choosing the recipe from the book. We bake it and post our thoughts, pictures, etc. on the day we choose.

Thoughts? This just appeals to me. We have a dessert group at church, but it's not very interesting to me. They just get together and eat desserts.

Here are some of the baking books that would be fun:

Pastry Queen by Rebecca Rather - a Texas girl!

The Sweet Melissa Baking Book by Melissa Murphy

The Greyston Bakery Cookbook

Tartine by Elisabeth Pruiett

Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook

Martha Stewart's Cookies - if we wanted to just do cookies for now!

Baking: from my Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan

Tell me what you think! I'm always looking for a reason to bake and I'd love to discuss recipes with people.

Dulce de Leche Brownies

These were fabulous! Aaron was my quality control and he told me that there had better be some when he got home. He is a brownie purist, so this is saying a lot.
I made some modifications to the original recipe and I like them better. I also made a 13 X 9-inch pan instead of 8 X 8 - to make sure Aaron got his fair share.

Jennie's Dulce de Leche Brownies (adapted from David Lebovitz's recipe):
16 Tbsp. butter, cut into pieces
12 ounces bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped (I used 6 oz. 70% chocolate and 6 oz. 82% chocolate)
1/2 c. unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
6 large eggs
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. toasted pecans
2 c. dulce de leche (I made my own with two cans of sweetened condensed milk)

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 9 X 13-inch pan with foil and grease the foil.
Melt the butter and chocolate together. Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Add in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the sugar, vanilla, salt and flour. Mix in the nuts, if using.
Scrape half the batter into the prepared pan. Drop 1/2 of the dulce de leche, evenly spaced, over the brownie batter, then drag a knife through to swirl it slightly. Spread the remaining brownie batter over, then drop spoonfuls of the remaining dulce de leche in dollops over the top of the brownie batter. Use a knife to swirl it.
Bake for 35-45 minutes (mine took 40). The brownies are done when the center feels just slightly firm. Remove and cool completely.

For a crowd, the bigger pan is best, but for just my family, the smaller pan works just fine. These are super rich, so be sure you have lots of milk on hand. Enjoy!

Making the dulce:
This does take forever, but it's pretty inactive. Basically, you put your can o' sweetened condensed milk in a baking pan or pie plate, cover it with foil and place it inside a large pan. I put a small kitchen towel underneath it to stabilize it. Heat your oven to 425. Pour water into the larger pan so it comes halfway up the side of your dulce pan. Put it in the oven. Let it cook for about 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours. I set my timer for 30 minutes and would take it out and stir it - you want it gorgeously caramel-y colored. I originally read that it only takes 1 to 1 1/4 hours - this was not true for me. If you stir it every 30 minutes, you'll have a good idea of how long yours will take.

Cinco de Mayo party!

Our apartment community is having a Cinco de Mayo celebration tomorrow night - means I don't have to fix dinner, so of course we're going! There will be a pinata for the kids and a burrito bar. All we have to bring is a dessert or salad. Well, like I'm taking a salad!
I found this recipe and am so excited about it. Dulce de Leche brownies. How perfect is that. I'm making my dulce de leche right now - takes forever, but so worth it. I cannot wait to taste these. Because I have to quality control them before we let anyone else eat them.
I think they need nuts though. Pecans for sure.

Mission Impossible

I've wanted to make this Lemon Meringue Cake since I saw the recipe in the Tartine Bakery cookbook. It was planned for my birthday. Sadly, that was a month ago. I'm ready to declare my own holiday. Hey, if the pot-heads can have 4-20, I can have Lemon Meringue Day. It will happen. I've been blessed with 2 dozen "real" eggs from "real" chickens - Mom and Dad have a co-worker who raises laying hens and they brought me a couple dozen eggs. What better way to pay tribute to those chickens! I will begin prepping it this week and finish it by Saturday. We will celebrate my new holiday - National Lemon Dessert Day - this Saturday, 4/25. I will post pictures of my final product. I hope it tastes as good as it looks, because it looks pretty good!
And I may have to complete my "Lemon Meringue" apron for the occasion. Just because I can and should.

Apron obsession

Obsession confession. I *heart* retro aprons. I love sewing them. It's getting out of hand though. Here's what I have. Actually, there should be one more up there - it just needs a little extra something before it's wearable.

And then there are, let me see, about 6 more in the works. I can't help it. I love to bake. I love to look relatively cute. The two can go hand in hand. It doesn't hurt the marriage relationship either - Aaron has a bit of a fetish now too (for entirely different reasons!).

It gets worse. I've passed it on to Laurel. She has 4 aprons. And her dolls have 2, so far. We'll be sewing more this summer. Will also has one, but he's happy with just the one. Not me. The more, the better, I say.

If only I could get excited about vacuuming in my heels and pearls.

A Tribute to my Favorite Color

How random is this? My favorite things, in my favorite color:

daffodils - we've been seeing them all over and it just makes the winter worth it

Tweety bird - had a t-shirt, had a stuffed animal - oh yeah, Tweety rocks

Spatulas - because you can never have too many

My Julia Child rosebush - the one that Laurel prays will come back - really, she does ask Heavenly Father to bless Mommy's rose bush

Poached eggs on buttered toast

Yellow cake with chocolate icing - yummmmm!

Tulips

My Dream Kitchen

Beverage of choice - lemonade (or lemolade, as Laurel puts it)

Lemons - so perfect in so many things like . . .

Lemon Tart
Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie

Lemon Loaf - making this tonight

Lemon drops!

Le Creuset in Citron - I know I would braise better if I had one of these

Ah, butter! Not exactly yellow, but closer to yellow than white

Daisies

I hope you enjoyed my little tribute. I'm working on remembering the things that make me happy. And yellow things make me very happy. I couldn't find pictures of everything yellow that I love. But I found enough!

Happy spring!

Cheesecake and Martha Stewart

I still haven't gotten to make the cake I want for my birthday. I suppose it's a little late now. I did get to make this on Sunday:

A gorgeous lemon curd cheesecake - recipe courtesy of epicurious.com. Oh my was it delicious!

And, bless her heart, I'd love to hate her but I can't! Martha has a new cookbook coming out and I'm pre-ordering my copy. The trouble is, I have to wait until June to get it. Argh! But then that gives me the summer to plan for fall birthday parties. Well, that's my theory anyway. But I will send it back with a little nasty-gram if there are any poo-frosting cupcakes in there. Somehow I doubt there will be. She's good - and very aware of how things look.
